View Full Version : AVG8 problems

Hi All,
I come again to partake of the wisdom of this forum.
I was helping a friend install AVG8 over the 7.5 version the other night, over the phone. I had previously sent her a disc with the install files on it.
While trying to instal it, a message appeared, to say install could not continue as the Windows version installed was not an original copy.

My question is, would Avast anti virus install on this machine, or give the same problem as AVG?

If this is so, is there another simple ,free, antivirus program that could be used?

I await your thoughts.

Definitely go for Avast. The free home version is fantastic.

At the risk of being told I haven't got a clue (which I'm willing to accept), I haven't had a problem with AVG 8 (free), since updating from 7.5.
When I do, I'll be quite happy for you all to say "told you so"!

You are all worth your weights in gold.
Thankyou, my friend will be most grateful, and I have learned something new.

AVG8 upgrade worked on the PC I was using AVG on, but I don't like AVG much either

Don't use it myself, but two PC's I look after for friends (slightly older XP boxes) have really struggled with AVG 8.0 - they ran 7.5 ok but 8.0 seems more bloaty??

Have since recommended Avira to them

I found that switching off the resident shield in AVG made a big difference. (the shield really slows things down).

The virus scan still takes a lot longer in version 8 than any of the earlier versions though.

Might give Avast a go though ;)

Yeah, well turning any realtime protection off will help, since it's scanning all files as they are used/created etc, but turn that off and you've turned off 80% of your antivirus

hi nothing wrong with avast its a god reliable antivirus from my experience and it also has the ability to do a startup scan b4 windows loads . i also believe that avg has more demands on system resourses therefore the slowing that some ppl report but my real fav antivirus is NOD32 its the lightest on computer resourses from experience altho its not a freebee but very worthwhile
avg is what i call as just an ok program but there are betta out there
