Fdisk off a Win98 boot floppy? Lol.

How wiped do they need to be?

There are several good wiping utilities on the Ultimate Boot CD.

If you want to wipe a disk properly, that's how long it takes.

To write some '0' across the disk?

I think for it to be done properly it needs to write to each sector 7 times.

Darik's boot and nuke will run quickly, just do full re-zero, don't run the multiple pass DoD wipes or anything (unless you want to be paranoid)

did you read my faq?
did you really read it?
did you understand it?

to wipe a 250Gb drive you may be looking at 5-10 hours depending on how many passes you do and such like.

any program that give results in less than an hour is NOT doing it right.

Geez, lighten up!

It's New Zealand! There's no wild fires. Petrol doesn't cost as much as in Europe. We should be happy ;)

dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdaSurprising how long a (Linux) system will stay up when you wipe the disk from within the OS that lives on it... It successfully finished, and the damn thing was still running!
