Starting PC this morning and got error Case fan not working,service pc etc.Opened case and fan not running, so purchased new fan same error on startup.It is a HP Paviliona6240a,no other problems.Can take it in to get fixed but like to try to fix myself first.Any ideas?

Which fan exactly? One plugged into the MB? Its not strictly necessary, you could connect it to a molex cable with one of those adapters.

The rear fan hat is screwed to the back of the case not the cpu fan.

Are you sure its not the CPU fan (mounted at the back of the case at the end of a duct from the cpu)?

Does the new fan have two wires, and the old one three? If so, you can't get a speed signal from the fan, so you will get that error message.

Hi thanks treid the HP fix but different BOIS so no help,yes it has a three wires to the conecter ,exactly the same as the fan i unscrewwed.

HI good old Harvey Norman fitted a new motherboard so all good now.
