http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html
Take your pick
* 4GB or 8GB flash drive1
* Holds up to 1,000 or 2,000 songs in 128-Kbps AAC format2
* Holds up to 3,500 or 7,000 iPod-viewable photos3
* Holds up to 4 hours (4GB) or up to 8 hours (8GB) of video4
* Stores data via USB flash drive

Best DVD ripper for the iPod is http://handbrake.fr/?article=download which is FREE and will rip to h.264 and any file size from 500MB upwards. You can adjust the aspect ratio in the advanced options but you shouldn't have any problems just ripping to the default settings. I use it all the time.

After you have ripped the DVDs in handbrake and imported them into iTunes>select the file and choose "convert selection for iPod/iPhone" and then sync when done.
