Hi,

A friend of mine had her new macbook stolen from her house. Other than police, is there anything she can do to get it back? Trace the person?

Thanks

Err... Remote activation of the Mac's webcam to take a picture of the grinning thief?

Sorry to hear about your friend's unfortunate event :(

Although there are a number of very good third party apps that can be installed in her Mac which allow the owner to take control remotely of the Mac and to take photos through iSight, unless the app is installed prior to the Mac being stolen - Apart from reporting it to the Police there is nothing much she can do at this stage to trace it.

One of the apps is called Orbicule

The only other thing she can look out for is if the person who stole the Mac uses iChat which will show up as a user on another Macs iChat.

Alternatively give this a try

If they use .Mac:

Here's a little story for you: An Apple Store employee had a party in her apartment. A couple weeks later her place was cleared out to the tune of about $5,000 worth of electronics, including her new Mac. Days later, a friend sees that she's online and alerts the Mac's rightful owner. Since she was running Leopard with Back to My Mac, owner-girl logged in remotely and activated Photo Booth via the screen-share function. And what do you know, it turned out that the thieves were some "friends" who were at the party a few weeks back. She took the photos to the cops and -- voila -- busted! The thieves, Edmon Shahikian, 23, and Ian Frias, 20, both of the Bronx, have been charged with second-degree burglary and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. Go go crafty nerdy girl! - http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/11/stolen-laptop-recovered-with-back-to-my-mac/

Trademe!

Then when you win the auction, take a baseball bat with you to pick it up.

Mac: Hi, I'm a Mac

PC: And I'm a PC

PC: I'm feeling nervous today

Mac: Why?

PC: With my new Vista OS worth hundreds of $$ I keep thinking someone is going to steal me

Mac: Ah, you'll be fine - Us Macs are much more expensive, so we're more of a target!

PC: I guess you're right.. Thanks for that!

Mac. Gets stolen. Every time.

The most ironic thing about that statement is how true it actually is.

People in the US by Zune "covers" for their iPods so that people will be turned away from stealing them. Alhough people don't put Zune covers on their Macs eeew they do tend to get stolen in high numbers because of their looks.
