View Full Version : Sharing a portable USB HDD between two PC's

Is it possible to have an external HDD connected to two separate PC's at the same time using USB?

I'm thinking not? Those double-ended USB cables that come with them are for supplying more current if required right?? Not for hooking up 2 PC's??

3 possibilities.

1. An enclosure with a ethernet port. Some available on trademe.
2. Set it to share across your network.
3. Get a switch as seen here - http://www.usbgear.com/usa/index.cfm - "The USB 2.0 high-speed 2 Port (2-computers) Manual Switch Box"

I use this one at home and it works well: http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=349422
(note that it uses the FAT32 file system, so not good for files over 4GB). It depends what you want to do. If you will have both computers on at the same time (and they are networked), you could connect it to one and share the drive with the other.

It really depends what you're trying to achieve...
