View Full Version : Can you make a USB flash drive bootable?

I've bought an ultra-portable pc (no optical drive) which comes with Vista.
I want to blow away Vista and install XP Pro.
Needless to say I don't want to splurge on a portable optical drive.
I have a 2gb usb key which could hold the XP install files.
Can you do this? How?

Change it to the bootdisk, in the BIOS, boot from it, and see what happens

Here's a tutorial from toms hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-pocket,1113.html) (condensed XP for emergency using the free bartpe builder) and for a full USB - XP boot up visit this (http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176) (lot of full on editing though). Both require the XP disc for editing and re-editing...
