Hi Guys,
My dad just checked his emails last night and he got 130 something "delivery failure notification".
Seems to me like he's got a virus and its trying to send spam (its all in foreign language and the ones that are in english are typical spam messages)

What do you reckon I should do?

He's got AVG Free Edition installed already (though I'm downloading Avast for him(I think its better))

Any recommends?

He may be a part of a botnet... I'd go nuts on it if I were you, throw everything at it. Storm, and other botnets around can often fly under the radar of antiviruses. There was a thing in a PCWorld about it a little while ago.

They evolve pretty much daily, so they're hard to protect against.

What has happened is that spammers have got you mail address from the net and are using it.The spam mail could for some reason not be delivered and has been sent back to the user address. In this case you. They dont use the mail adresses for long so you should not get to many of them returned. It is not a virus.

Or what he said ^^^

That makes more sense, because I can't imagine botnets using your own e-mail address, they just set up new ones by the dozens.

Just the first thing that popped into my head... sigh

It could be that he has malware that has turned his computer into a zombie, sending out spam. Check user accounts in your e-mail browser for any strange entries and if that doesnt work, try hijack this (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis) and copy the log you get on here.

If it was part of a botnet, theres no way they'd use his own e-mail address. Probably, like pancake said, someone got hold of his account for a bit.

A change of passwords should (hopefully) do the trick... but virus scanning, ccleaning, HJTing, and a myriad of other things never hurt really. Might as well be sure.

Anyway, GL. :)

( love this thing... :spam )

That is not what Pancake said.
He said "spammers have got you mail address"
It has nothing to do with compromised accounts or passwords.

It is simply a spammer sending out emails with that persons email address in the From field.
Happens frequently and nothing you can do about it except change your email address.
