I have a laptop with a wireless nic and sometimes I need to connect using a cable when reception is poor. Do I need to disable wireless when I am connected by cable or can both connections operate at the same time? They use different IP addresses.

Theres no point in using wireless if ethernet is used.

I've never wanted to use Wireless when I have access to a wired connection. For me, the wired connection works by default but when I want for my Firefox to use the wireless connection, I go to my network connections and disable the wired connection. I guess if it helps you, try disable the wireless (just open up Network Connections, right click on the wireless one and click on disable) and provided you have a working wired connection, your browser should know to use that then.
