View Full Version : Work this out

I have done a deep format of all four drives on my computer; XP is re-installed.

BUT, now when I boot up it runs through the POST setup and then stops and asks what OS I want to load. "Windows XP" or "Windows XP."
Then it waits for me to select one..If I select the selected on all is well. If I choose the other it pops up a "missing file" message.

I would like to get rid of the redundant option.

I would like to know how it got there in the first place.Surely the format should have got rid of all traces of the previous install

In yer C: drive there is a hidden file called boot.ini.

It should look like... (or something similar)

[boot loader]
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Open msconfig under boot.ini select check paths.

Thanks. Got rid of the unwanted.

Still like to know how it got there.

I find every now and then with an installation of XP that happens. Don't know why, but editing the boot loader sorts it out pronto. :thumbs:
