Hi

I am trying to find an alternative to windows live messenger. It's slow and i hate it.

I tried trillian for the past 3 days but there's just some bugs and I feel it is very annoying to use so I went to use Gaim which i used several years ago

I downloaded 2.4.1 and when I register my msn account it says unable to authenticate .net messenger service.

Can't seem to find anything about this problem and their support is really bad.

Anyone know how to fix this or recommend me an alternative program to use?

Thanks

Well if the hotmail service is down, like it was a few days ago.

It doesnt matter WHAT program you use, it'll say the same message, and you wont be able to log in.

Till MS fix it.

The prob was on the Herald site and most sites. There was also a thread here about it.

Its not GAIM thats the prob, its the server youre trying to login to.

Good morning. (Well it isnt outside, it's gonna P down)!

No prob, well I wouldnt be here.

BUT I usually take my flatmate to work in the weekends.

No point going back to bed, I may as well stay up.

Here's The Herald info on it (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10494836)

Altho this site (http://www.informationweek.com/software/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206900544) says it was restored. BUT some people still cant use it

I will ditch WML now

Nah, not into IM programs. I just use Mirc for IRC.

More people to chat to, at the same time.

Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client.

Note I do not use this just posting the link:

Since you're shopping for alternatives, Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.org/) is about as as lite as it gets and Digsby (http://www.digsby.com/) is a pretty flashy, self-coined "social network IM" because it has some sort of support for Facebook.

Digsby also has a nice widget you can use anywhere for people to chat with you directly (more socnet cred). I've set one up as a demo over here (http://nz.neopages.org/help/demo-digsby/), requires Flash and is quite light at 36KB.

If you're keen to download, I think a beta pass is "digsby".
