Hi
I am getting the following error message when running Vodafone Mobile Connect broadband on my laptop:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Buffer overrun detected!

Program: ...\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Bin\MobileConnect.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue and must now be terminated.

Having searched high and low on the net and the Microsoft site I have found a lot of speculation about this error ranging from a virus, spyware, hacking tool, Microsoft update conflict etc etc but no actual fixes except that it can occur while executing many other programs too so it's not confined to the Vodafone software.

I have run numerous spyware and anti virus scans, un-installed and re-installed the Vodafone software but no change.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit on a HP laptop.

Any help or ideas most appreciated :-)

Thanks
Peter

Post a hijackthis log, its in my sig. Put it in its own folder first. Run it click on scan the system, and save a log.

Copy and paste the log here.

Is it compatible with Vista?

Does it say that it works on Vista on the Vodafone site?

Have you contacted Vodafone?

Thanks for the quick reply! :-)

Yes, Vodafone supplied me the Vista compatible install disc for this software and has been running trouble free until recently.

Vodafone said not their problem and advised going to the Microsoft site.

Here's the log...

Uninstall ALL versions of Java, it looks like you've got 1.6.0 and 1.6.0.2 installed theyre both out of date.

Then install 1.6.0.4, link is in my sig.

Is Vista up to date with updates?

Try uninstalling this program again, delete its folder. Then use something like

ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com)

Install it (untick the toolbar option), run it then click on run cleaner.

Then click on registry / scan for issues. Delete whatever comes up.

Then install and see if that program runs.

Youre not the only one with this prob (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=962010)

Is the version of the program youre using a release candidate version or the final version?

Thanks for the advise, unfortunately no luck.

Followed instructions to the letter - error message still stuck there there on the desktop!? Can't get rid of it at all, very annoying....

Yes all Vista updates are current (last one on 15th)

Program is final version.

It started yesterday when I booted up, checked what happened the day before but no new software was installed, no email attachments were opened and no other changes took place on the pc. It just 'appeared'.

Searching the Net it seems to be a problem that has occurred not just with Vista but all versions of Windows and while running other programs. I noticed a lot of people have had it come up running IE7. No real fixes though....

Here's the latest log....

Does this vodafone program need Java or something to run?

I would run hijackthis again then tick these

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: bmnet.dll
O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: bmnet.dll
O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: bmnet.dll

Then tick fix checked.

Get this FIRST (http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm)

And run it AFTER you tick the above entries

Dont know if this helps (http://kbalertz.com/910435/Visual-Studio-stops-responding-create-project.aspx)

And tick these

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISUSPM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe" -scheduler

Then uninstall Java then update it.

Leave bmnet.dll in there. It gets installed with the Vodafone software, and it helps to speed up connections, using some random type of compression...

I'd completely uninstall and reinstall the VMC software, worked for me last time I saw this problem. Make sure you install the latest version, and when installing, make sure you run the .exe as administrator.

Leave bmnet.dll in there.

True but some sites say when its there it can break net access, whether its there or not

Fair call, possibly it could, although it would have no bearing on the current issue. Get rid of em if you want, but reinstall the VMC software afterward...

Cool thanks I'll give it a go, I have re-installed it several times but not as administrator....

Thanks for all your help guys, appreciated!

Done but no joy...

The three bmnet.dll's disappeared after I un-installed the VMC software and re-appeared after I re-installed it.

I did download and install Java from their site but the latest one I got was 1.6.0.3?

Latest log after re-install....

Java site is in my sig below.

Click on the here link, its got 1.6 update 4

Did you get that lspfix file and run it?

Is this version of Sun Java still installed?

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02) -

If it is uninstall it, and all previous versions of Sun Java, prior to 1.6.0.4.

There must be more than ONE program you can use.

No, only Java installed now is 1.6.0.3

Should I now delete this entry?

The lspfix deleted the following

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: bmnet.dll
O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: bmnet.dll
O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: bmnet.dll

Then the VMC software wouldn't work at all, reinstalled twice and still no go, couldn't get back on the net last night, finally uninstalled again and went through registry and deleted every reference to vodafone and reinstalled again, now back to where I was with error message sitting on the desktop.

This program has been working fine for about 6 months then this annoying error message started last Sunday when i booted up. Just wondering, Microsoft put out some large updates last week (14th), maybe these have now made this software incompatible? As I mentioned earlier Vodafone maintain it's not their problem and advised going the MS site - tried that several times, lots of references to the error but no actual solutions.

The java link http://www.java.com/en/ has one download button and that is the one I downloaded yesterday (version 1.6.0.3) - The other link http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp is a bit confusing, which one should I be downloading?

Thanks in advance :-)
