I am trying to download recent updates from Microsoft, but it tells me I need to download a particular item before I can proceed. It downloads and then tries to insall but fails. It tells me it cant install Genuine Advantage and goes no further. I have downloaded seperately the GA and it is insatlled but not recognised. Any suggestions?:help:

First of all, are you actually running a legit copy of XP?

Have you checked for Viruses/Spyware recently, and have you done a repair-reinstall recently. That's guaranteed to screw Windows Update over.

If there's one thing I've had so many problems with in the past is that damn Genuine Advantage crap. I'm starting to wonder if that program is legit!

My bro recently bought a 2nd hand laptop a while back and the version of Windows XP on it was apparently not genuine, according to GA, there wasn't much we could do after that as we could no longer get in contact with the seller. It didn't worry us, just meant we couldn't download/install a few things.

First of all, are you actually running a legit copy of XP?To test if it is - go Here (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/), on the right click "Validate Windows", it will tell you if your copy is legal, by doing this if you have a Genuine XP it sometimes "kicks it in the guts" and lets it work.
As long as its legal, try rerunning windows Update.

Here's the standalone direct download link (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498) WGA installer.

And here's the Diagnostic page (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/), it may tell you whats up

Thanks bevy 121 for the tip - went to the diagnostic site as per your link and was able to resolve the issue. I was able to download several updates but then after telling me they were downloaded and were going to be installed - after several minutes I was informed that they were not installed. So back to square one.

Download Dial A Fix (http://djlizard.net/software/Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip)<< Thats a direct download link, This page here (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/broken_windows_fixed_quick_with_dial_a_fix) shows what it looks like, unzip the file to a folder ( no install required) and run it, tick every thing. Reboot and try the windows updates again. Its a program designed to repair windows Update problems - works most of the time - but not to fix it 100% all the time.

Speedy Gonzales - I'm using Internet Explorer for downloads - I use Firefox at other times and it was all of the updates I chose.

For a long time you could update Windows without installing WGA, it used to be an option, then they forced it upon us.

I run legit Win XP but refuse to install WGA, I d/l'd a patch that bypasses WGA and allows Win Update to work and work fine. As to whether the patch is legal or not I have no idea.

It is like MS forcing IE upon us, not good IMHO. Their big brother tactics pee me off.

If you put auto updates on notify me, you'll still get them too.

Just wait for the shield to come up, select whatever and install them.

This will save you going to the site to install WGA.
