Hi

I have a KTX-FM-56k-VSI modem and I usually get speeds of 42,667kbps , 45,333kbps and 49,333kbps are these good or should I be getting more with a 56k modem?

As you may have read, there are so many factors influencing connection speed, not least the quality of the phone lines, and whether you are in the back-blocks. Many modems nowadays are 'win modems' where software does a lot of the work. Eg. on the same phone line I have one computer with a LT win modem, it never connects faster than 49,333kbps. A US Robotics internal, hardware modem, in my other computer rarely connects slower than 52,000 kbps.
The speeds you are getting seem about right, real-world download speeds will only take advantage of the higher connection speeds under ideal net conditions.

Anything less than 46666 IMO requires checking.
I get a constant 53333 and once 54447 connection and d/load speeds maxing at 5.9kbps. This is on a telecom line connecting to Clear.
On a saturn line connecting to Clear I struggled to get above 46666 and eventually had it removed.
I recommend you ring your phone coy and get your line tested for excess line noise. They can do that for you without fuss. If that comes back pretty good, then get your isp to check for data loss. If that comes back good, it maybe time to make sure you have all the latest drivers and optimal setup. Try the modem at someone elses place.
But IMO if you are on xtra, then their connection speeds suck anyways.

Good luck :)
