Hi there,
I read somewhere there was a rumour of a third Service Pack coming out this year for XP?
Does anyone have details as to whether this is correct?
If so, do you know if it will be able to update from SP1?
I'm thinking if it does, and isn't far away, it would probably be worth waiting, rather than install SP2 and then all the updates (altough I have Auto Patcher up to August 07 updates on CD).
If it was on my PC, I'd still update straight away- but it's not (I'm fully up to date), and if an SP3 did an update of SP1 including all updates to now it would make life easier and quicker.

Due out some time in 2008. RC1 was released in Dec 2007.

The RC version is already out http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=75ed934c-8423-4386-ad98-36b124a720aa&DisplayLang=en

But remember its RC, meaning still in testing stages, you can never be sure with MS and dates on final releases

It's due out sometime in the next few months. It can upgrade straight from SP1 without SP2. I've installed the RC version, and there is no noticable difference to normal WinXP, though apparently it's up to 10% faster.

From the horses mouth -

As noted on that page, all previously released updates are included in SP3. It is currently an RC release so should be available within the next few months. See also Wikipedia's article on Windows XP SP3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP#Service_Pack_3).

Edit: I should refresh pages left open before posting, huh.

Unless you download the offline installer for SP3 when it comes out, the more patches you install now, the smaller the sp3 download will be.

Unless you download the offline installer for SP3 when it comes out, the more patches you install now, the smaller the sp3 download will be.

If you plan to reinstall XP at any stage in the future, you're best to get the offline installer and save a lot of pain when the time comes to reinstall XP.

I'm sure it will be on a PCWorld CD/DVD shortly after it's released, so probably a non-issue for most.

Or, you could grab a copy of nLite, slipstream SP3 into your current XP CD, then if you have to ever re-install or format, all the updates are included already!

Note that XP SP3 doesn't include IE7, but you can download that update and slipstream it into your CD as well, so you will have a fully patched IE7 as well. Or else it will only update IE6.

You can download SP3 now by using windows update or you can got to microsoft's website and download it from the download center. You can update from XP SP1 straight to SP3 without getting SP2 because SP3 contains all updates untill the current update (which is SP3). Hope this helps.
