I have recently (and i think it has been for a while) noticed a small white dot on my laptop screen, i did try to like gently scratch it off with my nail thinking its dirty, but it wasnt. Its slightly off centre and really noticeable with a dark wallpaper/or movie, what is it?

A dead pixel probably.

There is free software somewhere that can check dead pixels. It runs through a series of tests changing the screen to different colours so that dead pixels are easier to see.

What type of laptop do you have?

On modern laptops the software that Bantu talked about is available to run during startup.

You could try this guide for removing a stuck pixel...

http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/24/how-to-guide-details-fix-for-stuck-pixels/,

If you have a dead pixel it will not work - but its worth a shot.

I have an entire line of these "dead pixels" running across my entire screen!
