..and started opening new tabs as fast as it could, all of them going to "about:blank", until it reached what appeared to be a tab limit (or it ran out of memory) and then froze

I couldn't even load task manager to kill it.

Eventually it responded to me clicking the X and it closed

I have come across websites in the past that have caused IE to do this, but it does not happen often. I always scan the PC thoroughly after it happens.

I had that happen here at work a little while ago and called over our IT guy. He looked at it and laughed, saying he'd never seen it before. I'm on IE6. It probably won't happen again, so I wouldn't worry about it. It is weird though. Use Opera instead. So much better :)

About blank in a Mozilla based browser is nothing. But in IE it can be:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/About:Blank_(disambiguation)

# about:blank (see CoolWebSearch), generic name for one of the most common but hardest to remove variants of CoolWebSearch malware

Its not hard to kill now - its an old one now, but I'd check just in case.............

I won't deny going to 'dodgy' sites sometimes, and I have had them try to install or run things which I was pretty damn sure was malware, but as I said before, when it did what it did, I was only at trademe and this site

It could be some addon, thats doing this.

I've having probs of my own with IE 7 lol.

I think its flash9e.ocx / part of flash, is crashing it.

I've uninstalled it, but I'll have to delete this file in safe mode, coz it wont go away in normal windows.

Well use Firefox - its a lot more immune to this sort of thing than IE is. I proved that to a customer the other day who had a hijacker or 2 in his system.
Firefox was oblivious......
