View Full Version : Gaming online takes up your download usage?!

Is this true? I'm using XNET and their Usage meter program and the download goes up by 100mb increments for about every 20 minutes I play Team Fortress 2 online... wtf?

How the hell can I enjoy gaming when it takes up my download? I'll be over my 20gb plan in no time :(

It doesn't make sense, I've already downloaded the game, their shouldn't be a reason as to why it downloads while I am playing...

I would say everything u do is counted. Besides email.

Doesnt matter if u watch videos, play games / chat in IRC, or video conference. Or download files.

Its still downloading / getting data isnt it?

I suppose, but to take up soooo much download in such little time is rediculous in my opinion.

Well, of course it does, theres a lot of data going between you, the servers for the games, and the people youre playing against

Its a lot more, than just browsing websites, or downloading files.

Team Fortress 2 is a steam game and it tends to be updated a lot. There was a big update for TF2 which might have been updated without you noticing. I find TF2 uses about 20mb an hour when I play.

When playing games you are having to download the data of other players as well as your's. Yes it can use it's fair share and it can't be helped.

100mb for 20minutes is excessive though so there may have been something updating.

If your not sending data between the server and yourself how do you expect to play the game online?

I would have thought downloading e-mail would also count.

AFAIK, this isnt counted on Xnet.

It may apply to other ISP's.

And according to the usage monitor I'm using from Xnet.

Local is 0.93, (inc email) International is 2.52 and National = 0.54.

Total usage atm = 3.06 (which doesnt inc Local).

If email was inc, it'll be 3.99 GB.

I think someone may be hacking into our network somehow.

because neither myself, or my brother are doing anything on the net. I just came back from watching tv and the data has risen by about 80mb when we didn't even do anything.

I play Virtual Skipper 5 online most nights for a couple of hours and use no more than about 20mb.

Shut down you router for a while and then check your internet useage.

Ok it's been about an hour and half since I turned off the router.

it was 2.33 gb when i turned it off

now its at 2.39 gb used up.

so in that amount of time 60mb was used when we werent even on our computers?

I don't understand.

Maybe the useage meter dosen't update strait away. I would check it out with xnet.

I'm pretty sure that usage monitor program was knackered from like Tue (13/11)

Here it stayed on 1.12 GB from 13/11 to Wed/Thur last week (21-22/11) lol.

Then decided to move.

But I'm not complaining.

wodrolb

but theres no way we used 2.49 gb in such a short amount of time.

wtf it keeps going up every 5 mins when I refresh it

You must have programs running in the background, that update or something.

Kill them.

The Xnet usage monitor was down earlier this week and it is currently catching up with all the bandwidth missed which is a slow and lengthy process.

Please refer to the status report: http://xnet.co.nz/cgi-bin/status.cgi?id=305, the catchup process should be finished by Friday (30/11) and should be back to normal after that.

Oh ok, I thought there was something wrong with it.

I'll soon find out, I'll go down in speed lol, which hasnt hapened YET.

Altho mine went up pretty fast. It was only 1.14 Thurs, its now upto 3.11 GB.

Wheres that Status info the main screen anyway?

I cant see anything about it on the Xnet site. Whats it under?

Edit: Doh Just saw it, its on the main page lol. Alongside network Status.

I find TF2 uses about 20mb an hour when I play. That's what I found out with most online games I play. If he's using more than that then I'd say it's updates etc, which'll be only temporary bandwidth usage. His 20gig account should be plenty unless he's playing 24/7. :horrified

Have you got a secure wireless network? Someone could be piggy-backing on yours if it is not encrypted.

also there could be spyware/trojans calling back in the background. Although you'd need a lot of these to account for usage to be noticable I think.

I don't see anyone mentioning it - but most ISPs refer to "usage" - not "download", since your data usage is made up of both upload and download. In a gaming situation your data usage might be twice what you expect. Since games will be updating the server as much as getting situation updates.

E.g with Xtra (i suspect other isps the same) Usage = download data + upload data.
