This might fix it (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320397)

Or this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314057/) if you upgraded to XP

WHAT was the exact message?

So you got a copy of XP Pro from someone.

You had XP Home and installed XP Pro over XP Home?

This will fix it in a few minutes - worked every time for me.

Down load FixNTLDR (http://tinyempire.com/notes/files/fixntldr.exe) run the exe file with a blank floppy in the floppy drive.

Reboot the PC from Floppy Select option 1

If you don't have a floppy drive download the Bootable ISO image (http://tinyempire.com/notes/files/fixntldriso.zip) burn the image to CD ( free image burner in my sig) and boot from that.

When it boots run system restore back to yesterday - - Normally fixes it right away.

If it doesn't then you can try to replace the damaged files, or Non Distructive reinstall of the OS.

And it still might not work. :( If the disk is FAT32, there is an "advanced feature" in XP which can create an extra directory segment for the root directory if too many files are put into the root. If NTLDR gets put into that segment, the boot code can't find it.

That boot CD I posted in # 5 should boot the PC fine, once it gets past the first stage the PC runs as Normal.

Had 1 guy actually leave the Boot CD in for over a month instead of getting it fixed

I love the CD you suggested, wainuitech. Has saved my bacon many a time.

Very well designed. And you can leave the CD in, and forget about it.
