I've had a gutsfull of this so-called free software as supplied on the cover disk of PC World.(and other mags too).
After reading the review in the mag I decided to give "Spyware Doctor" a trial.
I installed it and downloaded the updates. I ran the scan and received the expected answer. Several "serious" infections.
I clicked on fix.
Up came the message. Send us money and we'll fix it.
Like hell I will!
Any program that indulges in underhand fraud like this can't be any good.
I have no complaints about paying for it ,if it works. But if I can't get at least one free trial, I want nothing to do with it. It is now uninstalled.

And I should expect PCW to at least advise readers that they have to pay in advance to get a trial run

Want a catch 22 ? if you go to the PC Spyware site,Spyware Doctor (http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/) you can actually download and install it , and have it work for Free, its the Starter Edition Right down the bottom of the page - But theres a catch its bundled in what they call the Google Pack (http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html?hl=en&gl=us&ai=BeZMOdKYnR8KrJ56kmQTvvOn5BezuhSG8yqSDAsWNtwEAEA Egy9udCDgBUIfas8sEYKucsoWMKaABlpec_QOqAQoyMDcxODc4 OTY4sgEPd3d3LnBjdG9vbHMuY29tyAEC2gEyaHR0cDovL3d3dy 5wY3Rvb2xzLmNvbS9zcHl3YXJlLWRvY3Rvci9nb29nbGVfcGFj ay-AAgGoAwM&gclid=CPbdxqHMt48CFQ0_agod1Bu8dA), OK you can untick the other programs not to install, but do you trust google NOT to install "other stuff" that you don't want ?

I tried some reg cleaner program the other day and ran it and when it finished it said I had 900 and something errors in my reg. but said it would delete 30 of these and I had to buy the program to delete the rest. How do you know the trial version is not lying. Anyway I did what Jack did. My computer runs fine anyway.

Jack, we all know you have lot of time on your hands between buying new PCs and crashing airplanes, but surely you are old enough and wise enough now to know that if it ain't broke, you don't need to fix it?

I established a stable set up, now I don't bug it, and it doesn't bug me. Of course if there's a vacancy opening in the graveyard at the back of your garage, you are obligated to fill it, then entertain the board with the trials and tribulations of building computer number X+1 :p

Cheers

Amazing what you can find if you look on Google eh!

That earlier post I put in Number 2 , I mentioned the free version of Spyware doctor being bundled with "Google Goodies", well after doing a search on google, you can downlaod the free version that works Very well. Simply search for "spyware Doctor Starter Edition" OR download it from Here (http://www.zdnet.com.au/downloads/0,139024478,10634478s,00.htm) OR Here (http://www.download.com/Spyware-Doctor-Starter-Edition/3000-8022_4-10754824.html).

THIS is the version that PC World should have put on the Cover CD, its completely free, works just as good as the "trial one" and the main differences are not that great if you want to simply scan when ever you like see Here (http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/google_pack/). If you wanted the paid version you can upgrade to it.

Test wise - well I got a customers infected drive, ran spybot - removed 44 infections. Copied the drive twice, then ran the Paid version on one, free version on the other - same results a further 554 Infections. The free one removed them all, while the paid wanted $$.

Ok had my rant

What also annoys me is software on company websites that offer you "free download" on say Google.

Then when you get there what they really say is that their demo or trial is free to download ! But you need to pay or register etc.

That sucks - where else do you pay to download !
