View Full Version : Removing Brontok.C

Hello everyone.

I'm having a pretty nasty problem with my PC.

I just bought myself a new power source and 1 GB memory card after my previous PC had broken down, damaging my old hard-disk and memory in the process. Now my PC has a 30 GB Quantum Fireball hard-disk in it.

Anyway, just when i thought my problems were solved,my AVG Free Edition detected a virus yesterday.I-Worm/Brontok-C.

I'm using the latest AVG Free Edition right now. When i first saw the alerts,i clicked HEAL,and then it said File Successfully Healed, but a little time later the same files re-appeared,so i added them to the AVG Virus Vault. After i did this,my computer runs fine, but i noticed it takes 2 times the time to re-boot.I think i managed to tackle the virus quite quickly, because when the infected files it creates are in my AVG Virus Vault,my computer runs perfectly,i can play games, run executables, run registry checkers (Tune Up 07),Anti Virus programs, download files and do all the normal things, and AVG doesn't prompt me to do anything again.

However,it does prompt me to do something the next day, because,as i learned, the virus re-creates the infected files each day to maintain infection.Same story,i add the files to the virus vault and that's it,untill the next day.

This problem is kind of frustrating because,as i said,i have the new components and a freshly installed windows and i wouldn't want to already re-install everything just days into my new investment.

One other thing, when the infected files are in my AVG Vault,no virus or trojan removal program can detect the infected files let alone remove them.I have tried installing Bit Defender 10 then Kaspersky (after uninstalling AVG of course),did a scan with both, the only thing Kaspersky did is announce me it found the malaware and ignoring it,while Bit Defender didn't even find the virus.

The only place on my PC where i have the virus is C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Documents\ folder, where it creates extensions like Data COMPOSER.exe,SharedDOCS.exe,and other extensions in the My Music,My Videos,My Pictures,Sample Pictures folders.

Can anyone help me in removing this worm for good?

Welcome to PressF1 Luppi,

Try turning off system Restore,
(right click "My Computer"/ Properties/System Restore Tab/ tick box to turn off)
Reboot then rerun your Virus program, Go to Speedys sig (http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/member.php?u=8532). Download the Trojan remover, Rouge remover and install/update and run them. While there download HijackThis. Make a folder on the desktop, save it there.

Fom My sig, download Ccleaner, run that also to clean out the temp/rubbish etc. Also grab Spybot from my sig, install/update and run that.

Run HijackThis and post back the Log file.

When Speedy gets here & looks at the HijackThis Log he may be able to advise what else to remove.

Working on this now.

One question: Do i remove the files from the vault first so they get detected again?

System Restore was already turned off.

Downloaded, installed and updated all the programs you told me to,scanned the PC with each and every one of them after i had emptied the virus vault. It all came out 100% OK.I have had some Microsoft.Security.Center disabled things in Spybot, took care of them.

Here's the HijackThis log, scanned just now:

What ISP are you with??

If you're in NZ, tick this as well.

Did u select all options under utilities in trojan remover as well??

I would also get ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) install it, then click on run cleaner.

Untick the yahoo toolbar option before you install it.

I am in Romania,RDS (Romanian Data Systems)

I have installed ccleaner and have done two scans today, everything is perfect.

By selecting all options under utilities do you mean clicking on each of those and re-setting what it asks me to reset, like home page and stuff?

Have a read of this (http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/w32brontokc.html)

Does regedit open??

Luppi
29-10-2007, 08:44 AM
Read that just now.

Start - Run - Regedit

Opens no problem.

Should be ok, do another scan with AVG.

Altho AVG does pick up false positives.

Welcome to PressF1 LionDancer,

Can you please start a New thread with your problem, Doesn't pay to add a different problem to an existing thread.

BUT Just had a look at your log - The hosts file is riddled with bad things.

Download This File, Brontok Remover (http://www.sophos.com/support/cleaners/brontgui.com) Save it to a folder, double click it and run.

Go back to the start of this post # 2, and follow through what was put to clean out your PC. Then repost the Hijack Log.

One added thing - back up any data you may have before you start - looking at the logs this may get nasty. Almost every thing in 01 - Hosts - is nasty.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooo.

GOOD NEWS!

The infection is back.

Repeated all the steps you guys told me to,updated and scanned with all the programs one by one,no malaware/spyware/trojan found. It's the same Brontok.C,i added it to the vault when discovered, then deleted it and did the scans, now everything works perfectly again,i can download, run registry checks and run executables without it re-appearing.

Here's my latest HJT log for analysis:

Just as a thought,i think,if possible,that the virus might come in through a java exploit.Just a thought.

I would check the website http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/w32brontokc.html#table4 and check all the locations they say are infected etc in files and registry and check these and if they exist delete them

Probably best do it in safe mode with no internet connection too

Luppi

Well, the files (system processes/executables) are checked by Trojan Remover and came out clean.

As for the registry, they are checked by HJT (waiting for log analysis) and Rogue Remover, right? That came out clean too.

Well,it came back even after all the scans,in 3 places. It keeps comming back in fewer places.

Any idea on how to remove this COMPLETELY? Same C worm.

Get something better than AVG.

Like Avast Home (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html), which is free.

It MIGHT do a better job of getting rid of it.

I dont think you need AVG and Bitdefender.

Put HJT in its own folder then run it tick these entries and tick fix checked.

Closed browser/s.

Fixed them.

Umm,i don't HAVE Bit Difender on my PC,had some problems while uninstalling it a couple of weeks back though.

I cleaned those entries.

Still re-appears sometimes.

What to do what to do. :help:

Speedy Gonzales

Get ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com)

Install it without the Yahoo toolbar thing, close browser/s.

Then click on run cleaner

Then click on tools/uninstall.

If Bitdefender appears here, click on delete entry.

Then if the folder for Bitdefender is in program files delete it, and then go to tools / folder options / view.

In My computer. Select show hidden files and folders.

Then go back to My computer C:\Documents and Settings\all users\application data. Look for the Bitdefender folder here, if its here delete it.

Do the same for C:\Documents and Settings\your username\application data\

If the Bitdefender folder is here delete it, and in the local settings\application data folder.

Then go back to ccleaner (close browser/s again). Click on registry, scan for issues. DELETE everything that comes up.

Then uninstall AVG. And install Avast Home. Once you've downloaded Avast, put your mail address in on the site to get it registered (it is free).

Then install Avast, you may have to reboot DON'T say YES to the boot scan after Avast has been installed.

Update Avast once you reboot, then run Avast from the menu and scan the hdd.

Any idea on how to remove this COMPLETELY? Same C worm.

That's why I would check all the locations outlined in the virus report manually in case the scanners are missing something

Didn't do any good,Avast STILL detects it and does a huge scandal, takes me 5 minutes to add files to vault.

Get a decent AV solution as mentioned previously. Looks like the software you have isn't sufficient. I've had food success with Avast home edition. also the mcafee internet security or F-secure internet security. You can download a 30 day free trial off the net to see what you think. You really need to be in safe mode or to have used msconfig and selected diagnostic startup to stop everything unwanted from running.

Here's what i'll do.

Just downloaded brontogui and it removed 2 registry entries relating to the virus.

It's 10 PM here,i have school tomorrow and i gotta go to bed,but if it detects the virus again i'll install f-secure.

Where did Avast say it was?

Is it in the System Volume Information folder?

If it is, disable system restore, boot into safe mode, open my computer, go to tools / folder options.

Select show all files / untick hide protected files.

Right mouse on the System volume information folder / properties.

Security tab. add button. Type in the name that appears at the top of the start menu. Then click on check names, if you typed the name in right it'll appear .

Then ok then tick everything under allow.

Then ok. Then double click on the System volume information folder. Delete everything in it. If you've got more than one hdd or partition, do the above for all of them. Then reboot. Then do a scan with Avast.

See if it picks anything up then.

Nope.

It was in it's usual location,Documents And Settings (Data Bobo.exe,My Videos.exe,My Pictures.exe,255 something.exe).

Go to that folder and delete the files.

If they come back (or wont delete), then disable system restore.

Boot into safe mode, and do what I posted before (delete the files in the System volume information folder), and the files in Documents and settings.

Or whatever folder/s Avast is telling you, its in.

What option did you click on when Avast detected whatever?? Delete?

Luppi

Add to chest, then deleted from there.

I can't find the infected files.

Even if i check do not hide system files and folders, the files don't appear, but the infection does.

So do i install f-secure or whatever?

Any 100% solutions?
