View Full Version : Trojan infection

This is a similar problem to another thread, but with significant differences.

WinXP SP2 - operator is blind so can't see any messages. I'm looking at it for her.

In the last 6 weeks or so, system has been shutting down in random fashion.

I discussed the problem with an IT guru at work yesterday, who suggested that it might be a smss.exe trojan and that it might be in System restore so I shut that down. The trojan has removed AVG7.5 resident shield after I reinstalled two days ago. Before it did that AVG found no viruses.

I have downloaded Spybot and AVG Spyware. Whenever I start these two, the program gets so far and then shuts down - AVG Spyware when it is scanning the registry. Tried Housecall but that only gets so fare then the system reboots.

I have found in My Documents four registry entries dating back to last year, one of them being 18kb in size.

I cannot reboot into safe mode, as the system just reboots.

My questions are:
Should I try restoring the registry back to last year?
If I do that are there dangers in doing so? Should I remove the programs I installed over the last two days?
Do I just doubleclick on the registry entry in My Documents to make it work?

It would appear that a boot disk has never been made - If I make one now, will it carry the trojan? I have a 98SE boot disk for my own machine will that work?

Many thanks in advance folks.

Have you tried downloading and running Trojan Remover and Rogue Remover from Speedy Gonzales signature? Worth a try.

Try last known configuration whatever it is. After pressing F8.

How can you restore it if it reboots?

Well you cant now you disabled it, it would have deleted the restore points.

Do these registry entires end in .reg??

I doubt theyre registry entries someone saved. Unless whoever saved them often.

AFAIK, it wont do it automatically, unless you back up the registry yourself. I maybe wrong tho.

Only other thing you could do, (If last known good config doesnt work), is slave it to a working system. Hopefully, that doesnt get infected too.

Then do a scan with AVG/Avast/Trojan remover/whatever

If the hdd was formatted in NTFS, then no a 98 disk wont read it.

Grimy - Every time I run a detector program the system reboots. I will try the two you suggest though.

Speedy - isn't last known config the one when the machine was last shut down?

The registry entries end in .reg

It is a FAT32 file system

Thanks

I now have a much more serious problem.

DOS boot error

Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition1
NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition1

I do not have a working floppy drive on this (my) machine, but I do have a USB flash drive.

Correction - I now have a useable floppy disk drive.

Any idea which is the best site to get the appropriate files?

Hopefully the hdd is in FAT32, or you wont be able to copy anything to it.

So, what are you using now, if it cant boot into Windows?

If whatever you're using now has XP on it, copy the file from there to the floppy, or connect the hdd that wont boot to yours and copy this file to the hdd.

Altho it doesnt look like this file is missing, it maybe the boot.ini thats screwed.

And make sure the hdd thats saying this has something on it, if it does make sure its the boot disk in the BIOS.

And also make sure the virus option in the BIOS is DISABLED.

Speedy thanks for all your help - I do appreciate it.

I made a boot disk fro answersthatwork.com and managed to get the bad computer to boot up.

It is now working normally, although I haven't done any scans or anything yet.

How do I make sure that the boot sector is now correct - I mean should I copy the files on the floppy to a folder in explorer or something like that?

When I've got it booting properly I'll (hopefully) finish the other problem! LOL

OK - I did an AVG Spyware scan and it rebooted part way through.

Now I am in the screen where it says that Windows did not start succesfully and select an option.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe mode with Command Prompt
Last known good configuration
Start Windows normally

and it appears to have gone into a loop. Whatever conguration I select it always goes back to that screen.

Any ideas?

Why can't MS make an OS that requires no supervision????????

Did you delete the files, I said to delete?

In safe mode or somehow?

Windows is clean when u buy it or install it.

Its up to the USER to keep it clean. And things like malware / spyware / trojans will usually screw it up.And make it reboot.

Are you still stuck in that no boot loop Chris?

Try booting from the Windows install disc and do a (R)epair

If you then get it booted up - Click on Start>Run and type Services.msc
If there is a service with the name " User Initialization (usrinit32) "
- double-click it and hit the stop button in the window that opens.
Then change the Startup Type to Disabled
Lastly, click Apply and Ok

Run HJT again and select this entry (the last in the list)
O23 - Service: User Initialization (usrinit32) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\userinit.exe (file missing)
Then click fix checked.
Reboot

Just a suggestion here - uninstal Adobe Reader and get Foxit (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php) instead.
Huge difference in opening .pdf files and is much much less resource intensive
