How do I prevent artifacts occurring in my vinyl recordings.

Obviously, the source would have to be scratch free so the recorded sound sounds clear.

There are programs around, that'll remove hiss and noise, but some of these arent free.

It may also depend on HOW you're recording from vinyl to a computer.

Are you using something like a din plug to 3.5 mm and plugged it into line in on the soundcard?

Sony Sound Forge has a good audio restoration plugin.
Waves X-Noise is excellent for removing all sorts of snaps, crackles, pops, hisses and hum.
Check out Audacity, Wavepad, Neosound FX. I think Audacity is free.

Speedy G. is quite right - it depends how and to what medium you're recording your stuff.

Be encouraged though. It's possible to end up with clear, noise-free recordings.
