I have a 250gb external hard dive and the other and it fell off my desk and usb cord was pulled out. Now it makes a loud humming and beets/chirps ever 30 or so seconds and is not being recognized. Is there any way to fix this?
My computer is running windows vista if that makes a differents to anything

You probably killed the enclosure, specifically the USB connection. My brother did that.

The drive itself should be fine.
Buy another enclosure or a IDE/SATA to USB adapater and take the drive out of the dead enclosure.

Thanks for the suggestion but it didnt work. Its still made the loud humming and chirping.
Also if i have it connect and my computer is off, when i start up the computer it freezes

The chirping noise is probably the platters/heads whacking each other, the hum is the motor trying to spin the train wreck, biff the hdd and try another, enclosure may be bent/stuffed also tho.

Ok, but im not sure i get what your saying. Is there any to retrieve the the data on it with out spending more or is it totally shot.

You may, if you stop using it now, and take the drive straight to a data recovery specialist (look in the phone book), they may be able to recover your data, but it is seriously expensive to do this (up to thousands), otherwise it sounds like your drive is toast, sorry to say. :horrified

Out of interest what brand was the actual drive?

I've dropped my Seagate lots of times and its still quite happy.

My ext drive slid off my desk (unstable piles of paper and nice shiny case with no rubber feet - since remedied!) onto a carpeted floor while running. Much to my amazement it still worked!!! It is a Seagate, too.
