Preview: Windows Home Server Beta 2
If you have several PCs in your household, there are currently two ways of tying them all together: either get a NAS device, or set up a dedicated Linux box. Neither are perfect options: the former generally amounts to shared storage, and the latter is a complex option. With Windows Home Server, Microsoft is gunning for the middle ground the simplicity of NAS, but with server features and functions.

Meanwhile Apple has some plans with Leopard. ;)

What? It isn't that hard to setup a linux box (there are many guides out there) or something like FreeNAS. And it isn't very hard with OS X either - use Sharepoints if you want some better control, particularly with how it manages Samba (with OS X Server it is even easier).

Probably even easier for the average punter just to buy a hardware NAS ..

WHS has hit RTM in the last couple of weeks, and should begin appearing on shelves sometime after September (in the US at least).

I'll keep my server running MS-DOS. It's less hackable that way.
