How might you tell if one computer part is compatible with another e.g. RAM card with motherboard.

Welcome to PressF1 :)

Look at the type of RAM slot on the motherboard, compare it to the RAM your looking at. The internet is really good for specs of that type of thing :p

Do you know what the brand/model of the motherboard is??

If u do a search in Google/Yahoo, this will tell u what kind of ram it uses.

Well i'm not actually looking at any motherboard and ram card in particular just general guidelines about which two things go together

First you have to identify the stuff, using something like this (http://www.gtopala.com/) if you don't already have the spec sheets.

Any particular motherboard will have a manual. In this manual it will say precisely what kind of ram fits. Not sure what else you're asking.

Well it helps if u know what the brand and model is of the motherboard you have.

So you can see what kind of ram it needs.

Or else, you'll buy the wrong ram. It wont fit in the ram slots on the mobo.

Any motherboard can go in a system (ie: like if you're going to make a PC up), but then you have to buy a CPU and ram to match whatever the motherboard supports.

Most IDE hdd's should work on any system (for now).

As long as its got IDE connectors on it. The more recent motherboard can use IDE and SATA connectors on it. As above IDE hdd's will work on it. But for SATA, you'll need a SATA hdd and the cables to use it / so it works.
