I have my grandchildrens' computer with a problem.

They cannot use IE6. I have been able to go back several Restore Points to see if I can get IE6 up and running but to no avail.

The error is "IE has encountered an error and needs to close"!

I have checked the technical jargon from the error report and it would seem to be an iexporer.exe problem. The code is 0x000001d. Flags 0x00000007 and the address is 0x000000007c812a5b.

Being pro-active I have now installed IE7 but I'm afraid that I have exactly the same erorrs appearing.

I have now installed Opera but MS will not allow me to use Opera to update the XP operating system.

Anyone got any ideas?

Get FF with the IE Tab add-on if the updates are critical and needed to get IE back up and running.

Could be an addon its using or something. Get hijackthis in my sig, put it in its own folder. Run it click on scan and save a log.

Copy and paste the log here.

Have you tried reinstalling IE?

Download IE7 from the MS website and try that in safe mode (IE's safe mode, not Windows's one)

Some, but by no means all installations of IE appear in the
'Add/Remove Programs' folder ...
See if it's there, if so, click on it.
It gives a choice to repair IE
Try that !

Thank you all for your responses. I used Speedy's sig for Trojan Remover and found that it worked a treat. Generic W32 worm seems to have been the culprit but this has been dealt to.

At the same time I was able to upgrade IE6 to IE7 via MS and apply several updates to the system and then completed a very long overdue defrag. All now seems well so again, thanks for all the suggestions.

Good to see it was fixed. You do have a firewall/anti-virus running right?

Thanks Beeswax34.

Yes, although both are McPhee. Can't say I'm happy with that and should I get another problem from the kids I will remove McP and use something else.
