Hi there,
I have a problem with both MSPaint and Gimp, therefore I think the problem lies with the computer and not the program...........
When I make a drawing or sketch, everything is fine until I save the drawing as jpg, bmp or gif. But when I reopen the file, there seems to be a smearing along the coloured areas, which tend very slowly to grow. I can spend hours on making the sketch - with lines, curves, letters etc.etc. and the sketch remains stable. After saving, when I reopen the file, there is smearing (ghost pixels?) all around the drawn areas.
Anyone know what's going on?

Use Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com) instead of MS Paint.

What sort of compression are you using when you save. How often are you saving the files. What options are you using/enabling when you save the files?

JPEG degrades with each save/edit. It's a lossy compression method.

When using The Gimp, save in it's native format for editing, then convert a copy (save as) for general use and a smaller file size.

In Gimp, either save it as .xcf (native gimp format) or .png.
