I have a family member looking for help with a failed Vista installation that has taken out the original operating system. No recovery discs.

Compaq Presario SR1925AN original setup,
- WinXP Media Centre on c:\
- Recovery on j:\

I have a working WinXP Home installation on d:\ but that lacks the proprietry software that came with the machine whereby you can access the recovery partition.

Now
- nothing on c:\
- temporary XPHome on d:\
- Recovery on j:\

I can't find an obvious setup.exe or similar amongst the recovery partition files/folders. What do I need to do to use the recovery partition to return the machine to it's original state with XPMedia on c:\?

Note that running the restore will wipe the entire hard drive, and restore it to where it was at the start. But as you said its a temp xp install, im guessing that wont be a problem.

gidday,

the recovery partition can usually be accessed by restarting the computer, and tapping F10
