Hi all

I need to buy a new PSU cos the generic one that came with my case sounds like a tractor and I have been having random shut downs.

Reliability and quiet are two important considerations.

I have narrowed my choices to two from my supplier (but any recommendations at all will be gratefully accepted). They are:

http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Power/ToughPower/W0103/w0103.asp

and

http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/st60f/st60f_spec.html

Guess I have two main questions:

1) They both have 4 x 12v rails and the Thermaltake is rated at 18A across all four so I guess this is better?

2) The Thermaltake has a 14cm fan as opposed to the Silverstones 12cm fan so I guess this would make it quieter?

As you can see I am leaning toward the Thermaltake unless anyone can provide me with some info I don't know?

Cheers.

Silverstone has modular cabling FTW!

Wish I could afford that, but have the ThermalTake 460W.

So you think the modular cabling is a better investment than the higher rated 12v rails and the bigger fan? I know you have to take the ratings on the 12v rail with a bit of a pinch of salt.

Cheers.

Chances are the Thermaltake couldn't sustain that much current over all 4 rails anyway. As a rule Thermaltake PSU's are arse, but the Toughpower range have a fairly good reputation. I just brought a Enermex Liberty 500w for my new rig and it kicks ass!! Modular cabling FTW! Out of the 2 PSU's your considering I also second the Silverstone they have a great reputation.

Im still impressed by my Enermax :D

The silverstones (from what I've been reading) look to be a good buy. Don't know anyone with them however

AS for TT, I think they live more on their name than actual reliability

Thanks for all the comments.

I decided to save myself $60 and went with this:

Well new Silverstone PSU all up and running and no puffs of smoke!!

It is considerably quieter, but by no means silent. It still whirrs away.

However, it was a crapload heavier than the old generic one that came out of the box. Couldn't get over the weight difference!!!

Hopefully I won't be getting any of those random shutdowns now.
