Probably a stupid question but I'd rather ask and be told the obvious than not know at all.

Is DX10 only available through Windows Vista at this stage or can it be downloaded as a seperate package. I had a look at the Dirct X web site yesterday but they only have DX 9c available for download. This leads me to believe that it is not yet available for download or is not compatible with any other OS except Vista.

Can DX10 be extracted from Vista in anyway and then installed on a Windows XP system?

Cheers

Vista only.

Not separate.

NO DX10 for XP.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directx_10)

DX 10 is exclusive to Vista.

However, according to this site (http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35110)
DX 9.L when and if it comes out, will be for XP.

It'll make DX 10 games work with XP.

Windows Vista ships with DirectX 10 and is the only version of Windows which it is offered for, and it has a large number of changes: DirectInput will be deprecated in favor of XInput, from the Xbox team. Likewise, DirectSound will also be deprecated in favor of XACT. DirectX 10 has also dropped support for hardware accelerated audio, opting instead to render sound in software on the CPU. DirectPlay is deprecated in favor of Xbox Live whereas DirectShow will be deprecated in favor of Media Foundation, a different set of APIs debuting with Windows Vista to handle audio and video playback. DirectMusic will probably remain the only component intact

DirectX 10.0 Windows Vista exclusive

The latest release version of DirectX, DirectX 10 is exclusive to Microsoft Windows Vista.

Hope that helps. Looks like you canno't use it on any other OS than Vista (at this stage anyway, no idea if it will be backwards but I Highly doubt it. Otherwise there would be no reason for gamers to move to Vista)

Your first post got me excited then you crushed it with this post :dogeye:

I think I'll wait a little while to see what Vista can provide me other than DX10 ;)

DX11? Pfft DX12 all the way.

By the time SP1 comes out for Vista there should be some decent DX10 games anyway, so wait till then.
