I quite regularly get a warning when I am closing down computer - Instructions at 0x69532777 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. I use Norton System Works 2007 (includes registry cleaner) but the problem persists. Do I need to worry about these warnings or can I safely ignore?

You have a worm or trojan, or something. Get trojan remover in my sig below.

Install it run it click on scan, then select the 3rd to 7th option under the utilities menu..

The windows file is called svchost.exe not svchst.exe

Many thanks for your interest. Tried as you suggested but no problems surfaced so I am still looking for an answer.

Well use one of the programs in my sig below.

If u have XP or 2000, get hijackthis . Create a folder and put the file in it, then run it click on main menu, then scan and save a log. And copy and paste the log here.

Its not a windows file, I know that.

Thanks for the continued interest. Have run the Trojan Remover again and followed your recommendations as regards steps 3 to 7. Also read somewhere Windows Automatic Updater can cause SvcHost problems so as recommended turned it off did a Manual update and then turned the Automatic Updater on again. This did appear to fix the problem briefly earlier but it started up again after a short break. Will see how we go and if problem continues will get the hijackthis and post a copy of the log for your expert perusal.

So is this file svchst.exe or svchost.exe, there's a difference.

The problem is SvcHst as per copy of warning copied here:

ccSvcHst.exe Application Error

X The instruction at "0x69532777" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

OK

Post a hijackthis log.

Ah there's also a file called ccsvchst.exe which belongs to a Nortons program.

It could be that System Works thats crashing.

It could be a bug in that program. See if there's an update for it using liveupdate if it has it.

I am in your debt - thanks again. I will go to Norton and see what response I get from them but may take 2/3 days. Meantime copy of log as asked for:

The log doesnt look tooo bad.

Put hijackthis in its own folder then run it again. Then click on what u clicked on before tick these entries then tick fix checked. Close browser/s.

I would say it's ccsvchst.exe part of Nortons thats crashing.

Have done all as you suggested. Will now await comment from Symantec(Norton) and will advise success if any later. It may take a day or two. Again many thanks.

Just to finish off this thread - I finally resorted to completely removing all traces of Norton (as far as I could) and then reinstalled. Appears to have worked as regards the svcHst warnings. Norton still slows start up somewhat and next time around I will likely look for an alternative. Many thanks for the help provided.

Uninstalls ALL Norton 2004/2005/2006 products from your computer:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

Note, I have not used this, I just came across it in my travels and remembered your problem.

To all those who find this reply: I used the tool provided above:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

and it worked! I had had the BSOD for a solid month and removing all Norton Anti-Virus and Internet Security software fixed the problem. I am now going to subscribe to another, and even better respected anti-virus/security product!

Cheers!!
