Hi Folks ...
Anyone know where I can buy a legit copy of "Windows 2000 Professional"
Think I need the 'Full Retail' version not Interested in the 'OEM' or an 'Update' version. New & sealed package would be nice too, but anything that's guaranteed to work would do the trick ...Must have the number thingee of course!. Running 98SE (update) at present. Want to run 'Google Earth' Needs 2000 (At least) & XP won't fit. The 'rock & the Hard Place' Problem !
Thanks in advance.
Regards to all. :)

Look for computer sales, closures, clearances around your area.

If your lucky enough you can get full copies of 2k for less than $10

Thanks for coming back Bob ...
Just missed one on 'TradeMe' ... Got pipped in the last 50 seconds!
It went for $186 (Too slow on the buttons I guess) ...

A few more replies would be nice though.

I wouldnt even bother with Google Earth.

Its not even up to date. (Or should I say, in real time, like now).

Its like 2-3 years behind. So what u see isnt or wont be today.

That maybe the case for NZ, but other parts of the world itís only a few months out of date.

Think somebody ended up with a broken nose & severe burns in the original story !

Yeah your probably right, although Theresa could probably afford a gerbil but then I guess with guinea pigs being bigger than gerbils it was a case of "Go large"

I don't think there is much difference between the OEM version and the retail version, with windows 2000. It doesn't need to be activated unlike window XP. One of the things that makes win2000 quite valuable, and is why you won't pick up a copy for only $10, is that you can upgrade from win 2000 to vista, and only pay the vista upgrade price. This can make a vista purchase relatively cheap if you have already got win2000.

New, genuine Win 2000 here (http://www.itserve.co.nz/) with others back to 98 SE, but be sitting down before you go to the OS page.

[QUOTE=R2x1;534964[ be sitting down before you go to the OS page.[/QUOTE]

Thanks for that. I see what you mean.
What a rip off. And it's only an OEM!
Now ...About the OEM version. If I buy one. & it's 2nd hand, who's to know
if it had been 'activated' or not. Apart from ME when I install it! Would it run, or say 'go away'. Have heard that OEM's will only run on the systems that they were shipped with. Am I wrong in this assumption?
Regarding 'updates' This machine came with 98 with an 'update' CD to 98SE, which it runs now. It's a Compaq, so, it's fraught with 'issues' don't want to add to those 'issues' by adding another update to it.
Thanks to all for bearing with me.
Regards.

If your computer cant handle XP, what makes you think it will be any good at google earth? It IS a 3D app.

what else do you run on the computer, win2000 is really a business app and you may run into all sorts of problems with other applications, is win XP really such a stretch?

Like what? Most programs that work on XP will work on 2000.

Just stick to XP Home if you can get it cheap. If your a student, you may get it cheaper.

To be honest, getting a copy of Windows 2000 legitimately is going to be hard.

not necessarily, i suggest the user does a google search and notes any specific app's that may be an issue, as mentioned, XP would probably be the go.

Well u didnt tell me why did u?

There will be a few programs, that wont work like IE 7 and WMP 11.

And some of the newer programs that will only work with XP obviously.

Reason that I'm not keen on XP is that it's a P3 500MHz with 160Meg of RAM
& a 15Gig HD ... & it is not worth another update (of the specs) Done once 5 years ago. Machine now 7.5 years old. From what I've read, on XP it'll either crawl or, won't go at all. whereas 2K will go OK (hopefully!) I'm a pensioner, so money's tight
Thank you everyone, but, I think I'll persevere with 98SE.
The 2K thingy was a bit of a 'pipe dream' anyway
Regarding 3D app's this thing's got an Asus 6600 card in it, supposed to be 3D compliant. Never tried any though. Guess I won't get to try it now.

If you can get a free unauthorised/unlicenced version of the software somehow I know someone who can probably give you a legitimate COA (certificate of authenticity) number.
