Web literature seems to suggest that the default IP address for a Dlink modem /router is 192.168.1.1

However the ones Telecom supply (namely the Dliink DSL302G) are all set up for an IP address of 10.1.1.1, and the DHCP dishes out addresses in that range.

Purely out of curiosity, is there any good reason for this?

I understand both these addresses (192.168.... and 10.1....) are reserved for LANs , so it should make no difference, is there some advantage?

Thanks

So why do they change the default setting from 192.168.1.1 to the 10.1.1.1. series when they are both private internet addresses and would both do the same job?

As before, just curious.

It was probably done so that D-Link could tell the difference between a router that was bought in a retail shop and one that was supplied by an ISP.
If it is an ISP supplied one they would probably tell you to talk to your ISP if you had any problems.

My DSL-504T, bought from a shop, had 10.1.1.1 as its default address, for what it's worth.
