I have an ex business PC. It was free and is about 5 years old.

It has
512 mb Ram
80gb HDD
Gigabyte GA 7ZXR motherboard
Athlon 1.4

My six year old son wants to play Spongebob Basketball and Rugby 2004. Spongebob is playable but flickers a couple of times a second (imagine playing a game while blinking as fast as you can ad you get an idea of what it is like to play)the Rugby 2004 gives a blank screen and from memory the monitor light goes from green to orange (standby?). We can play Zoo Tycoon 2 although it is a little slow.

Because of its age I do not want to throw too much money at the PC. The games my son plays are not too complex at this stage and I figure that by the time he starts playing complex games it will be time to buy a new one anyway.

The motherboard has 1 4X AGP slot. I have seen some AGP cards for around $120-130 at Ascent and that is about as much as I want to spend. Is it worth a crack or should I try something else?

This card should do the trick from Ascent.

Thanks Trev

Should I be concerned about the ram or the chipset?. I noticed that there was a Powercolor Radeon 9600 Pro EZ Edition Video Card, Radeon 9600 Pro, 256MB, DDR, 8XAGP, TV out, DVI for $1 more. Am I right in thinking that you can plug a 8X into a 4X slot but will only get the 4X performance?

I forgot to mention that I have a midi Tower so it will take full sized cards.

I'm not familiar with the Radeon cards. Yes the extra ram would give you better performance. Yes you can run an 8x in a 4x computer, I do.
