View Full Version : Websites - embedded music, hosts

Myth

I have somehow been roped into my first [proposal of a at this stage] 'true website'. Not that it worries me, although webpage making isnt my forte it is one way of getting my name out there. I know html, will have to learn up on cascading styles and have Dreamweaver MX somewhere round, but the possible client has asked for one thing specifically; at least the front page and one other are to have embedded music (so that when someone surfs to the site, the song starts auto).
I just want to know, how best should I do this, and other than mid format, what other formats can I do this with?

(Oh, and Im also looking for good hosts, .. so if you are in this business or know of someone reliable who is, drop me some prices.. its not spam as I am requesting it :))

Embedded music on a website is actually really annoying and also a bit last century. Also a lot of people out there have very different music tastes so it depends on what age group the web site is aimed at. If it is just for general use then I would suggest avoiding embedded music unless it is for simple mouse over sounds on buttons. The bulk of successful sites today such has Amazon, Google, Yahoo, Trademe, Telecom, Apple simply go for varying forms of clean simple design that works and gets their message across.

since winmacguy did a good job of answering your question about embedded music, I wont add any thing more to it.

Have a look at these websites:

http://www.hostinghub.co.nz/
http://www.weblist.co.nz/web-hosting-directory.php
http://www.netguide.co.nz/Home/Shopping/ISPNetDirectory/Domainnamesandhosting/tabid/114/Default.aspx

& do a search of PressF1 for web hosts / web hosting

Best of luck with your website & your hunt for a web host :)

If you need any help let me know I would be happy to help where I can.

Embedded music in a site, particularly the first page, is true amateurism... if it was me I'd tell them to piss off and find someone else.

The page/site is to be aimed at a very particular group, not really mainstream

They are actually very expensive for a host. They cost $22.50 per month, and you have to pay extra for spam filtering.

A good list is at...

I good hint is to email them if they have an uptime monitor, that you can seee how reliable their servers are, as some of these budget priced hosts have shocking uptime, which can be as bad as 10% downtime a month.

You should expect to pay around $15-20 per month for at least 50MB of diskspace, on a raid dual xeon server.

Heres are newish site that has music, and I think it was done by using a flash file. http://trenthamcity.co.nz/
