I've got a PC here that took a hit from a 11-33KVa power surge caused by vehicle vs pole ( BTW the pole won )

It boots but the modem is fried as it tests earth and injects a great noise into the phone line. To that end I have installed a replacement pci modem in the same slot, however the computer now posts but won't boot when the new modem is installed. Any suggestions?

Have you tried putting the modem in another slot? As the other slot could be damaged?

Also does the computer posts if the modem is not installed?

That's the weird thing it boots with the old damaged one installed yet it'll only post if I put a new one in :groan:

Update

I've tried two modems from other machines I have and in both PCI slots on the fried machine, in all 4 possible variations it posts but then hangs & won't boot.

Looks like the motherboard is toast as well.

Try an external modem.
