Can anyone recommend a budget photo printer please?

Thanks.

Here's some (http://search.dse.co.nz/search.php?sessionid=458c5ade0126cc4a2741c0a87f330 6b2&site=&w=photo+printer&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=Go)

Depends on how cheap.

There has been lots of discussion on this very topic over the last few months. Did you do a search of the PF1 archive?
I did that yesterday and very happily and confidently bought a little HP from what I learned.

Depends on how cheap.I'm after a recommendation from someone who owns or has seen the results of a machine that can print up to at least A4 and under $200. If we don't get a recommendation we'll probably grab a Canon Pixma iP4300.

From all the reports I have seen in PC mags, I think most combination scanner copier printers these days will do a pretty good job as long as you put in a high enough resolution image on suitably glossy paper you should get a pretty good end result.

I have not seen that particular printer in action myself but I have a Canon Pixma MP760 multi-function that I am very happy with. The IP4300 has five tanks and duplex printing like mine, features that I find invaluable so if it were me I would go for it.

Make sure you get a printer that has separate inks and atleast 5 colours.

I have a HP Photosmart that has 6 colours and does a nice job of photos on the more expensive paper (everyday gloss is pretty cheap and does a good job as well).

And yes it also relies on the quality of the picture. I find I cannot crop it much before I start getting pixelation from a 4.5MP Camera.

DSE are advertising a Canon Pixma with duplex on their web site speccie for $199 until 24th. May suit the need.

Disclaimer: I have never touched, owned, fauned over or even coveted a Canon printer. Have an HP 5550 somewhere... haven't seen it for a while though...hmmm. Also have a Minolta colour laser, but that's a bit of overkill I think.

I had an HP photosmart printer, till the LCD decided to scramble.

And put crap on the screen, so no-one could read it lol.

Don't know if this is a common prob. With these printers. It's looking inside a wardrobe atm.

I've yet to get some glossy paper to see how this printer prints photos. So, can't tell u what its like.

If we don't get a recommendation we'll probably grab a Canon Pixma iP4300.Get it. In my experience (we have a pixma ip4000, and grandma has ip4300) they are extremely good printers, and are relatively light on consumables. They also can do just about anything you are likely to want to do with a printer, even print CDs, and the drivers are rock solid stable and feel 'well finished'. We also use ours to print onto silk fabric labels. They have user-replaceable printheads for when they eventually wear out, or if you damage them - most other printers require taking it to the service shop to get it replaced. The 5 cartridge ink system's also pretty good - there is a mammoth cartridge of 'standard' quality black for plain B/W text printing etc, and a high quality black for use when printing photos & hi-res documents.

We have a Canon i550, 4 seperate tanks. Has been very good. Would not hesitate to buy Canon again. The Yellow ink keeps running away, the seal around the tank outlet/print head is leaking. Probably cheaper to buy a new printer than have it repaired. I think it is about 3 yrs old. PJ

Thanks again for your earlier input folks. We got our printer today - the Canon IP4300 and it's a delight. Just as great was the excellent price and service we got from Softwareshop (http://www.softwareshop.co.nz) - just $185 inclusive.

Nice one Greg, glad to hear you are happy with it. That's a really good price, too. Thanks for letting us know.
