Hi All..... My computer has 33 running processes, Maryann has 38. Both using XP Home. How do we bring up a list of these so that we can see what is happening? Thanks. PJ

I've got 32, with half a dozen apps open at the moment.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete then click the processes tab.

Press ctrl-alt-del, to bring up the task manager.

And then click on the processes tab.How does he know that he's got all those processes running if he hadn't already brought up Task Manager?

In retrospect - perhaps he's got a third-party app running which has told him.

Ok done that thanks. Damned if I know what to do with the info now I have it. The CPU Usage showed 4-15%, so I suppose my m/c is ok. PJ

I have the new record - 57! :D With Firefox and my virtual pet (Felix) showing, the rest are background processes.

Wasn't that felix thing something nasty?? Like spyware or something?

I remember seeing, or hearing about it ages ago.

It was some kind of cat animation thing.

I have 63 :p (but then my systray is about half my taskbar)

I recall a thing called "Bonzi Buddy" which apparently had adware in it or something...

Felix the Cat? I don't see anything nasty about it.

Tasks: 102 total, 2 running, 100 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie ;)

I actually had over 1400 tasks running once when the USB hot plug daemon lost the plot and spewed processes ...

It would seem, from the replies, that the number of processes running does not affect the operating speed of the computer. PJ

Are you worried you have too many running? Or maybe I should say were you worried as your PC is rather stingy compared to the others on here. :p

I have 36 running at the moment with half a dozen apps running along with Opera.

It does but if the machine is grunty enough to handle it there won't be too much of a problem generally, unless you want to run a very lean and mean machine. The type of processes running is just as important. Take Nortons for example - you have read untold times on here how much of a resource hog that is.

HijackThis is a good tool for people to analyse what processes should and shouldn't be running.
