View Full Version : Win98se problems.

I am trying to setup my old 486 with Win98SE for the grand-kids.

The HDD is only 6g and of course is a little old. The g/k we thought had mucked about a bit in the sys files as several were corrupted or missing.

I formatted the HDD and loaded Win98 and then after re-booting applied the WIN98SE upgrade. This caused similar problems such as corrupted/missing files. I have tried 3-4 times, same result.

I guess that the HDD is beggered and I should replace it. Am I right?

Format the drive.
Install Windows from the CD.

If the drive has problems you will get errors etc at any stage of these processes, not just after you do some update.

Once Windows is installed install the drivers for the motherboard chipset, modem, sound, graphics etc etc.

Then if it will be connected to the internet, install a firewall, anti-virus and antispywares.
Then leave it alone!

People are giving away Pentium I's (mind you, never when I'm around). If you are around Wgtn, I could give you one (I'm sure your 486 is a lively pc ;)

couple of things.

firstly don't install 981st ed then upgrade it to 98se. simply install the 98se.

2ndly, more importantly don't install 98 on a 486. win95 runs slow enough. upgrade pc or use 95.
