View Full Version : "My documents" inaccessible

My computer recently caught a virus infection (despite running up-to-date Norton anti-virus!) and I had difficulties getting rid of it. A sure way to fix this is to re-format C: drive and install a fresh Windows XP. Since I keep "my docs" on a separate hard drive, I didn't think I needed to back it up.
Now I can still see "my docs", but I can't access it anymore. I was advised to make sure I was using the same username and/or computer name as before. I have tried all possible combinations I could have used, but to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions how to make "my docs" accessible again?

Boot off a live linux CD, navigate to the directory the documents are stored in, copy and paste the contents to a new location.

Do a google searchand find out how take ownership of the files.

If on XP home version you need to boot in safe mode to do this

There is another way: quote by me :D

You should be able to boot XP in Safe Mode (press F8 before Windows starts). Right-click on the folder and click Properties. Click the Security tab, and ignore the message (Click OK). Click Advanced and click the Owner tab. Choose your name from the Name list. Tick "Replace owner on sub-containers and objects" and click OK. Click yes to the warning that appears. Hope this helps.

Works on XP Home and Pro.
