We just obtained a fancy set of all the LOTR collectible movies.

1) They're region 1, so I had to set my PC's DVD player to suit, and now have only three changes left. Grrr. I've never done a firmware upgrade before, and I'd like to make my player region-free. Please can someone advise.

2) The movies won't play using my PowerDVD software - it insisted I install the pathetic Interactual player. Is there any way around this?

Thanks.

You could try DVD43 (http://www.dvd43.com/).
It should remove all region protection on the DVD allowing you to watch it with PowerDVD.

Wots VLC?

DVD43 isn't going to help me play the original DVD disks is it? I have AnyDVD which is supposed to do something like that, but me non compus mentos.

My DVD drive is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D

[edit] And keep in mind I've got two seperate problems - one being how to play the DVDs with PowerDVD, and the other to get my DVD player to become region-free.

www.videolan.org (http://www.videolan.org) should solve both problems

Just google for firmware upgrades for your drive, the site where you download the firmware will have a guide for doing the flash. Its normally very easy and quick and just runs in a DOS prompt. Just remember that like any other firmware upgrade if the power cuts out halfway through the drive will be toast.
