View Full Version : Problem with Regclean and Netscape Communicator

10-09-1998, 09:50 AM
Having installed Communicator4.06 I find using the MS Regclean utilility prevents the Preferences dialogue in Communicator from opening. If the registry is restored with the Reglean undo file, then Preferences is now operational again.
Is there a fix or work around for this problem? Has anyone else found this to occur?

is it just me or is bumping this post a waste of electrons :-)

I suspect that the problem is not in the newer version of Netscape.

after 3 years I would be supprised is the writer is checking each day to see if anyone has answered him.

Ok everyone pin back your ears :)

In actual fact though this old post may raise hilarity and mirth, what it does illustrate is the miserable attitude and underhand practices of Microsoft towards Netscape at that time. Is it any wonder that MS gets continually criticised?

Now listen up. I stepped back in time over lunch, fired up Win95B, installed Netscape 4.07 and downloaded MS Regclean 4.1. Now this version of Regclean is a very much later one than the version I used 5 years ago.

First I ran jv16 Regcleaner which is pretty searching and gets rid of most registry errors.

Then I ran MS Regclean, asked it to fix errors, which it did and it makes an undo file.

Then Netscape 4 was run, went to Preferences and got the error message "Unable to load the preference DLLs. Please re-install Netscape Communicator".

I looked at the undo file and from it made up this .reg file which when run restores Netscape preferences:

I havent followed up what the MSDASQLErrorLookup means yet, but the mnpref32.dll is the Netscape dll, that Microsoft removes.

So after all this time an answer has been found.

Cool. It's kinda like the JFK assasination and the gunman on the grassy knoll. In this case, the gunman has been found, alive and well and living in Redmond .....

So, they've been altering peoples systems beyond their brief for a while now, then!. Did the Regclean Eula give themselves permission to do this? Were the terms, trojan and worm coined back then, I would call that a registry crack.

I wonder if you could dob them in and collect the reward Terry. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. (not a bad idea, realy)
