Our laptop is rarely used on the Internet, and of course the first thing I do when I connect it is to update AVG.

What happens when using the Check for Updates feature, is it prompts me for an update 4 or 5 times - usually the first one is 10 megs or so, and then a few more with smaller sizes.

After downloading and installing them I eventually get a message that no further updates are available.

But... the normal grey icon in the task notification bar doesn't change to the 4 colour icon that I get on my regular PC after an update has successfully happended.

What gives?

There might be another service of AVG that is not running like the email scanning.
Go into the AVG control center and have a look.

also if it hasn't been updated for a long time it pays to get the opotional update or download the manual update.

Hi Greg. Couple of months ago I had a somewhat similar problem - not identical - with AVG and sent them an email outlining it. The reply was prompt and after I had sent them the files they requested they sent further advice and the problem was resolved. Their email content is here just as an example, not as a resolution to your exact problem:

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your email.
Please try to do followings to solve your problem:
- remove WAIT4SD file if it is present in AVG7 program directory
(C:\Program Files\Grisoft\Avg7 by default)
- remove both subfolders (UPD7BIN and AVG7UPD) from AVG7DATA folder:
WinXP, 2000, 2003
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data\\
- remove also the contents of Temporary Internet Files
(IE Tools menu -> Internet Options -> Temporary Internet Files
section -> Delete Files button -> Delete All Offline Content)
- restart
- try to update again
If the problem persists, please send the following files for further
analysis:

* AVGINET.LOG
* UPDATE7.LOG
* UPDATE7.LOG.BCK
* AVG7.LOG
* HISTORY.LOG

you can find them in the AVG7DATA folder + subfolders:
WinXP, 2000, 2003
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data
Please note that some folders could be hidden by default Windows
settings. It can be changed in Start -> Settings -> Control Panel ->
Folder Options -> Show tab -> Show hidden files and folders.
(The location and names could be a bit different, it depends on the
operating system version.)
Thank you for cooperation.
