Ok, I have a virus that gives me constant loads of pop-ups from IE when it's not even running, I need to know the steps to succesfully identify a virus/trojan/spyware and then destroy it.

Use a virus checker.

since you havent posted your operating system I'll assume that you are running xp........clik the link below and download 'ewido' it's EXCELLENT and it's a free months trial ......it soun'ds to me like the possibility is that you have some nasty spyware not necessarily a virus.......anyway..download ewido then update it then run a scan....

What kind of pop-ups? It might just be the Messenger Service, which is easy to disable.

Internet Explorer Pop-ups...porn pop-ups and "your computer is infected with spyware" pop-ups that are spyware in itself. And Windows itself was saying I had a virus it had the virus alert thing in the tray, but it seems to have dissapeared after the scan, and no pop-ups either. But there was lots of spyware on my comp though so that was most likely the problem. I already disabled the messenger service I believe. I'll check anyway.

Really I was just looking for a good free anti-spyware software to get it off of my system. I'm pretty sure it's fixed thanks guys for your help. Might have to buy ewido.

I've used AVG free for seven years and these comps are still going fine. I'd advise you check thru the FAQs and you'll learn a lot.

yeah thats right, just fix the symptoms not the cause. if it wasn't for the popups you would never know you where infected. most likely you have multiable infections........

but hey you don't seem to care about infecting everyone else on the planet  :badpc:

Ok, how would I identify the source? Please don't flame me, I'm not too experienced with virus's, although I do realize that was an obvious problem of fixing the source, i'm doing too many things at once...

Absorb the relevant pages there and you'll be away on a sleigh :D

The source of most viruses and spyware include but are not restricted to emails, surfing dodgy websites (eg game cheat sites, porn and gambling sites, etc etc) with an insecure OS and browser and clicking on popups or "subscribing" to view restricted pages and downloading and running files from websites.

Securing your OS and browser, using anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, avoiding dodgy websites and using a lot of commonsense whilst browsing goes a long way to preventing infections.

This section (http://faqf1.net.nz/index.php?title=Security) of the FAQs might be of some help.

Perhaps to help the original poster/person...

It's vitally important to keep your system clean...not just for your own security, but so that you don't pollute everyone else on the internet.

Frustating as it might have seemed in an answer or two to your request, there are reasons why people get upset at others who don't take security seriously. It hurts everyone else in the world if you are spewing garbage and redirecting pronography, kiddie porn and laundering money for drug cartels....a little extreem possibly, but not entirely improbable.

You should be incensed that there is pornography and spam and malware running around in naked computers...they harm everyone. This is the reason for a certain...how can I say?....acerbic response to what seems like a non-chalant view by yourself to a very pressing need.

Please take the seriousness of the situation under advisement, and try to secure your own machine to keep all of the www running better.

Get anti-stuff of your own...there are many discussions and raves about what's good, bad, better, best as far as security programs are concerned.

Come back and ask...it will be worth it.
