Will M$ do one more update before it orphans 98 and ME?

This is pure speculation, but there may be a patch bundle next week designed to shore up Windows 98 and Windows ME systems........ as this is the last month that Microsoft will be shipping security updates for those systems.

It is getting hard to keep up with all these flaws in Excel being discovered on a daily basis. Looks like hackers have unearthed yet another "critical" flaw in the spreadsheet program that could be used to hijack vulnerable Windows machines.

French secuirty outfit FrSIRT says this flaw may be related to a previously identified Excel security hole that Microsoft warned hackers were already exploiting.

And, now a word from the horse hisself, Mr. Bill:

Seven Security Updates From Microsoft Next Week! Get 'em while they're hot!

Next Tuesday is shaping up to be another busy one for computer and network administrators responsible for keeping hordes of machines updated with the latest Windows security patches from Microsoft. Redmond said today it plans to issue at least seven updates next week.

Microsoft did not disclose how many individual security vulnerabilites those patches will address, but it noted that at least four will plug holes in Windows and three will fix problems in its Office software suite. Security researchers recently pointed out three flaws in Microsoft Excel and Office that could let attackers assume control over PCs if users open documents or spreadsheets programmed with malicious code (or clicked on hyperlinks embedded in them).

Software blueprints showing would-be attackers exactly how to exploit two of those flaws are now available online, and Microsoft said it has received reports of one of those vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild.

Doesn't worry me if/when they stop support.
I will continue to administer my partners computer for her for a fair while yet. Though we haven't done a patch update in months anyway.
Eventually I will change her to Linux (maybe within the next year), but for the time being 98SE suits

heh....there was only ever about 3mb of patches released for W98 (excluding browser updates but what a joke that is, they dont close the holes, they moved a couple around, introduced some whoppers and left the big fat easily messed with crap right where it always was).

The difference between W98 with and without patches is nothing. The MS patches sure as hell wont save your bacon.

I've been using 98 since ...98 and at first I got all the updates then got abit tired of all the fuddle and then gave up entirely about 5 years ago and the two net-connected machines I use run like water downhill. M$ gets people as much in a FUD with its patches and updates as it does with the OS in the first place.
