Just been trawling through the system32 folder and found a bunch of files:

RO1CFF.tmp.LOG
RO1D0C.bac
RO1D0C.tmp.LOG
RO1D0F.bac
RO1D0F.tmp.LOG
etc.

The log files are all 0 byte size. The bac files are filled with cryptic code.

There are 419 of these files, weighing in at 482Mb. I haven't the foggiest idea what they are or what puts them there. Can anyone throw any light on the mystery?

Many thanks!

Ok, not sure what they came from but why not download CCleaner, get the slim version, it is better believe me, the Standard has Yahoo toolbar option build in, and use it to clean up your system, recommended, I use at least once a day, you can run it with a right click on the recycle bin, very convienient:

Make sure you use the option to backup registry deletions and changes, also good for getting rid of the hotfix uninstals from MS if you are sure you do not need them, look in the settings for the many options.
