Start it in safe mode & sign in as Administrator with no password, normally works with XP Home, unless your friend has put a password in for the Admin.

Don't start in safe mode - no need to. Just hit CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the welcome screen, and you'll get a classic login box. You can log in as administrator from this, and it makes life easier than trying to change settings at 640x480 mode (and it's quicker).
