I'm tearing my hair out - all i do is come home from work for the last 2 weeks and try to figure out this problem then sleep and repeat.

I built a computer 2 months ago:

AMD 64 3700+
ASUS A8N5X
WD SATA 320g HD
ASUS combo CD/DVD
ANTEC 500w psu w/ dual 12v
XFX nVidia 6800 XT pci-e
XP pro w/ sp2 all updated and current
4x512 Corsair XMS3200 (same model specs in dual channel)

It worked fine for the first month - now for the last month I am having serious issues.

Here is what happens:

The screen will get distorted - either whacked out polygons or symmetric distortions. Sometimes it will freeze and pop back to normal or it will just freeze.

Then either the monitor will blink to black for a couple seconds then pop back on and repeat.

Or after it freezes it will turn black and nothing - the cpu is still on - but nothing happens - i can do nothing but a hard reboot.

other times it will crash - and for literally a split second i get the BSOD then it reboots.

I can find no rhyme nor reason why this happens. Sometimes it happens constantly and consistently - other times i can go for hours with no problem.

it almost always happens when i play BF2 - but it also happens on the desktop - and 2 times it happened during POST.

--------------------------
What I've done
after reading and researching it seems that it could be:
vid card faulty, power supply, a device driver, corrupted xp install, over heating, other.

* I've monitored the temperatures and voltage - all seem fine.
* taken out vid card, memory visually inspected and put them back in - looks fine.
* flashed bios to newest version
* uninstalled, reinstalled back and forth for the vid driver
* relaxed the memory timings to 2.5-3-3-6 2T
* tested memory
* disabled the hardware accelerator and unchecked write enabling
* have the case opened with 2 4" fans right on the cpu/vid card
* several runs of NAV internet security and spybot

**I am very careful about minimizing virus/malaware risks.

It really doesn't seem to like BF2.

Please Please I really need help - i'm out of ideas and it seems over my head.

Looks like some of those entries are pointing to Nortons, the video drivers, or the videocard.

Are all the drivers for the mobo installed as well??

I just tried BF2 again - boom crash - but the BSOD is blaming
nv4_disp for an infinite loop.

Could this be the drivers for the mobo chipset? Which is nForce4?

If so what can I do?

This file belongs to the videocard drivers.

Either uninstall the Nvidia drivers in add/remove programs, use Drivercleaner pro (http://www.drivercleaner.net) to remove all entries for the videocard drivers.

Or take the videocard back and get it replaced. If its under warranty.

And make sure you're installing the 64 bit version of the video drivers, if the mobo and version of windows is 64 bit.

Speedy Gonzales
05-05-2006, 05:29 PM
Get updated videcard drivers from here (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp)

Make sure you download the right version for your version of windows.

Commie

ok i just crashed again - though this time it was the monitor blinking on and off...grrrrrrrrr

it definitely seems to be something with nVIdia.

So either the vid card, firewall, mobo chipset.

For the life of me i cant figure out how to get rid of the firewall.........

i'll try using the drivercleaner pro then re-install the drivers. and yes i have been removing thru add/remove software - and getting the drivers straight from nvidia.

no im not running the 64 bit versions

Speedy Gonzales
05-05-2006, 05:48 PM
Install drivercleaner and run it in safe mode. NOT in normal XP.

Then select the Nvidia drivers (the entry that just says Nvidia), and it'll remove all entries for it. Then reboot, then reinstall the latest version of the videocard drivers. If it still crashes, the videocard is the prob. Take it back.

What firewall? If this is the NV firewall, this is part of the mobo. If you're talking about XP's firewall, DON'T disable it, unless you have another firewall installed.

Its either the videocard or the videocard drivers.

Speedy Gonzales
05-05-2006, 09:09 PM
What version of the BIOS is on it??

It looks like the latest 0902 from 24/3/06 fixes a IRQ conflict.

A8N5X BIOS version 0902

1- Fixed RIS failed with NV onboard LAN due to IRQ conflict.
2- Fixed system hangs on POST while installing some PCI-E x16 VGA cards.
3- Update AWDFLASH to V1.17

Commie
06-05-2006, 12:01 AM
it is version 0902

and unless both my case LED readout and the nVidia display are both wrong it isn't overheating

it's the nvidia firewall that i cant get rid of

gonna try and get rid of everything thru safe mode (for as many times as i've stripped down this vid card i feel like i should buy it dinner or something...)

Speedy Gonzales
06-05-2006, 12:07 AM
The option to turn off the Nvidia firewall maybe in the BIOS.

Not on the hard drive. As its onboard the mobo. It's not something XP installed.

Look in the manual for the mobo if u have it.

Commie
06-05-2006, 02:30 AM
Nothing in the bios concerning firewall - at least that i can find.

I have d/l all the new drivers for chipset and card. Removed via add/remove programs.

then booted up in safe mode and used drivercleaner to purge them.

then try to reinstall.

i can reinstall everything except when i get to the Firewall and Network Interface Manager.
it then says that they are already on my system (albeit in a different version) and that I need to uninstall these first.

The problem is I can find no way to uninstall them. Not thru add/remove software - nor can i find a way in the bios.

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/423503.html (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/423503.html%5D) You should be able to uninstall it by going to Windows Add/Remove Programs and selecting NVidia Drivers, and then select the Network Access Manager.

Once you've uninstalled the FNAM/Firewall, you will have to redownload the programs you want to install like MSN Messenger - the firewall corrupts the downloads which is why you haven't been able to install MSN Messenger properly. If you try to download and install Java with the Firewall enabled you will have the same corruption problems.

If you've downloaded and installed any drivers or programs since installing your NVidia drivers I would actually uninstall them, redownload and reinstall, to be safe because chances are that Firewall has corrupted something during the download and your system will be unstable. I know mine was - I kept getting system freezes and spontaneous reboots. Ever since getting rid of the NAM and redownloading/reinstalling drivers/progs my system has been running with no probs whatsoever.

If you do a Google search for "nvidia firewall corrupt" and you can read more on the problems caused by that Firewall and what people have done to deal with them. This may help you

Commie
08-05-2006, 10:58 AM
Well - I think the problem is solved.

somehow the bios got tweaked and it started looking for my vid card as a pci not a pci-e. I can only guess that the bios got corrupted when I tried updating awhile ago.

I'll check back if this doesn't solve it.

Commie
