What was the last thing you did? Install or uninstall something? In which case boot into safemode and run System Restore.
Or virus/spyware?
If you can't fix it then you might have to do a Repair Install.

Its been going wacky for the last couple of days, so i reinstalled XP again yesterday it went ok for a while, about 2 hours then started doing this again, i can't put my finger on what i installed or uninstalled that may have caused it, i have run antivirus but nothing comes up.

Whats the processor in the system??

Is SP1 or 2 installed?

Does it show a blue screen? With the name of the driver?

Untick automatically restart under startup and recovery, if u havent yet.

Its a Pent 4 - 3.0 mhz, and running sp2, yesterday it was showing blue screens before i reloaded it, but now its just restarting all the time.
I will untick auto restart now.

IF YOU EVER GET INTO WINDOWS, BACK UP IMPORTANT FILES.

The BCCode looks like it's a problem with the NTFS file system, in other words how things are stored on your hard drive.

Your message is unusual, since "The system has recovered from a serious error" message usually means a bad device driver, caused by a hung thread.

If you can boot into Safe Mode, you might want to do a check disk.

Otherwise you could try it from the recovery console

Hmmm see if your CPU matches the MS Site (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885626)

If it does, I would install that patch from the MS site.

Test your RAM with memtest86 (freely downloadable). This kind of error message as well as the other symptoms you metioned is a indicator of faulty ram.

I used memtest, it found 14 errors in 5 minutes, so i took out 1 x 256 mb ram card and left the other 512 mb in there, it has run with no fault now for well over 30 minutes with no probs.

thanks very much for all your help,

Could i ask someone ? would i have put more strain on the lesser mb[256] memory stick, by having the other one twice its strength ?
I will get another 512 mb one to match now though, just curious.
many thanks

If the mobo supports dual channel memory (if its got 4 ram slots), it'll be better using 2 512mb simms (if u want 1GB), which are the same brand and speed, to make use of Dual Channel.

I dont think it'll make a diff with the 256mb simm.

BUT, as above if the mobo supports dual channel, get 2 identical 512mb simms.
